SplitFlap – Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 21, 2026

Overview

SplitFlap ("the App") is a split-flap display application for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data the App accesses, how it is used, and what is stored.

Data Collection

Aside from the anonymous analytics described below, the App does not collect, store, or transmit personal data that identifies you. All user content — messages, quotes, custom color patterns, timer settings, and preferences — is stored locally on your device and, where applicable, synced privately through your personal iCloud account.

Device Permissions

The App may request the following permissions, all of which are optional:

  • Photo Library (iOS, macOS): Used only in Photo mode to create a pixelated board display from your photos. Images are processed entirely on your device and are never uploaded, shared, or stored beyond your current session.
  • Apple Music / Media (iOS, macOS): Used only in Now Playing mode to read the title and artist of the currently playing song and display it on the board. No listening history or library data is accessed, stored, or transmitted.
  • Location (iOS, macOS): Used only in Weather mode (currently hidden/disabled) to retrieve local weather conditions via Apple WeatherKit. Location data is not stored or transmitted beyond the weather request to Apple's servers.

You can revoke any of these permissions at any time through your device's Settings app. The App will continue to function normally without them — only the specific feature that requires the permission will be unavailable.

iCloud Sync

The App uses Apple iCloud Key-Value Storage to sync your quotes, custom color patterns, favorite patterns, and early-adopter status across your devices signed into the same Apple ID. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to your iCloud data.

Now Playing Detection

On macOS, the App reads system-level now-playing information (song title and artist) to display on the board. This may detect music from any audio app (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, etc.) using standard system APIs. No audio content, listening history, or playback data is recorded, stored, or transmitted.

Remote Configuration

The App periodically fetches a small configuration file from a publicly hosted URL to enable feature announcements and seasonal themes. This request contains no personal data, no device identifiers, and no tracking parameters. The configuration data is cached locally and used only to adjust in-app display options.

In-App Purchases

The App offers a one-time in-app purchase to unlock premium features. All purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store and StoreKit. We do not have access to your payment information, Apple ID, or purchase history.

Widgets

The App provides home screen and desktop widgets on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Widget data (clock time, quotes, messages, color patterns) is shared between the App and its widget extensions using a local App Group container on your device. This data never leaves your device.

Analytics and Tracking

The App includes no third-party analytics, tracking, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs, and does not track you across other apps or companies. Our own first-party PulseKit component reports only the anonymous, non-identifying data described below under "Anonymous analytics & purchase reporting"; it is not tied to your name or identity.

Third-Party Services

The App does not share data that identifies you with third-party services. Its external communications are:

  • Apple StoreKit — for in-app purchase verification (handled by Apple)
  • Apple iCloud — for syncing your data across your own devices (handled by Apple)
  • Apple WeatherKit — for weather data when Weather mode is enabled (handled by Apple)
  • Remote configuration fetch — a simple HTTPS request with no personal data
  • PulseKit / Proceeds — the anonymous, non-identifying analytics described below, sent to our own dashboard (hosted for us by Supabase)

Data Retention

All data is stored locally on your device and in your personal iCloud account. Uninstalling the App removes all local data. iCloud data can be managed through your device's iCloud Storage settings.

Children's Privacy

The App does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children. The App is suitable for all ages and contains no user accounts, social features, or data collection mechanisms.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.

Anonymous analytics & purchase reporting

The app reports a few anonymous things to our own dashboard (called Proceeds, hosted for us by Supabase) through our first-party analytics component, PulseKit. Each is tied only to a random install identifier created on your device — it is not your Apple ID, IDFA, or IDFV, is not linked to your name or identity, and is not used to track you across other apps or companies. None of it includes the content you create in the app.

  • A once-a-day "app opened" ping — a count that the app was opened, with the app version and OS version, so we can gauge how many people use the app.
  • A purchase report — if you buy or restore a purchase, the Apple-signed transaction details (product identifier, transaction identifier, and date) are relayed so the sale is recorded. This contains no payment card details and no identity.
  • A daily subscription-status snapshot — if the app offers a subscription, once a day PulseKit reports whether a subscription is currently active and which plan, so we can count active subscribers in aggregate. If the app has no subscription, nothing is sent here.

This reporting is built into the app; it does not read or transmit the content you create. In App Store terms it maps to Product Interaction, Purchase History, and a Device ID (the random install identifier), all declared as not linked to your identity and not used for tracking.
