Projector throw distance calculator

Enter your projector's throw ratio and either the distance to the wall or the image width you want. You get the rest of the numbers, with the formula shown.

  • Throw distance: 12.00 ft
  • Image width: 8.00 ft
  • Image height: 4.50 ft
  • Image diagonal: 9.18 ft (110 inches)

Formula: distance = throw ratio × image width. Height = width ÷ aspect ratio. Diagonal = √(width² + height²).

These results are estimates, and projector specs vary. Test before you mount anything.

Questions

What is the formula?

Throw ratio equals distance divided by image width. So distance equals throw ratio times width, and width equals distance divided by throw ratio.

Where do I find my throw ratio?

In your projector's manual or spec sheet. It looks like 1.5:1, and you enter 1.5. Zoom lenses list a range, so try both ends.

How accurate are the results?

They are estimates. Projector specs vary, and lens shift, keystone correction, and measuring from the lens rather than the case all change the real picture. Test before you mount anything.

Which aspect ratio should I pick?

Pick your projector's native ratio. It changes the image height and diagonal, not the width calculation.
